"Does it hurt?" is the question I'm asked most, and it's often the one thing that stops people from booking. So here's the honest answer.
The needles
Acupuncture needles are nothing like the needles used for injections or blood tests. They're solid rather than hollow, and hair-fine: many times thinner. They're single-use, sterile and disposable.
What you'll feel
Most people feel a light prick as the needle goes in, or nothing at all. After that, you might notice a dull ache, a tingle, heaviness or a spreading warmth around the point. That sensation usually fades quickly. If anything feels sharp or uncomfortable, just say, and I'll adjust it.
What treatment is like
You'll lie comfortably on the couch under a blanket. Many people find acupuncture deeply relaxing, and it's not unusual to drift off to sleep. In Five Element acupuncture, some needles are in for just a moment.
