Your first visit

What to expect, how to prepare, and answers to the questions people ask most.

What happens

1
A proper conversation. Your first appointment lasts up to 1½ hours. I'll ask about what's brought you, your health and history, your sleep, digestion, energy and mood.
2
A traditional diagnosis. I may take your pulses at both wrists and look at your tongue. In Five Element acupuncture, I'll also be noticing the subtle signs that point to your element.
3
Your first treatment. You'll rest comfortably on the couch while the needles do their work.
4
A plan. Before you leave, we'll talk about what comes next and anything you can do at home.

Initial consultation & treatment: £45

Common questions

Does acupuncture hurt?

Acupuncture needles are solid and hair-fine, far thinner than a needle used for injections or blood tests. Most people feel a light prick as the needle goes in, or nothing at all. After that you may notice a dull ache, a tingle or a spreading warmth. Many people find treatment deeply relaxing, and some fall asleep.

Is it safe?

Acupuncture is very safe in the hands of a properly trained practitioner. I use single-use, sterile, disposable needles, and follow the British Acupuncture Council's code of safe practice. Side effects are usually mild and short-lived, such as slight bruising or feeling tired after a session.

What should I wear?

Loose, comfortable clothing that can be rolled up to the knee and elbow is ideal. You may be asked to remove some clothing for certain points, and you'll always be covered with a blanket.

Should I eat before I come?

Yes, have a light meal a couple of hours before. Try not to come very hungry or straight after a big meal, and avoid alcohol beforehand.

How many sessions will I need?

Everyone is different. We'll talk it through at your first visit and review how you're getting on as we go. Many people start weekly, then space sessions out as they feel better.

Can I have acupuncture while pregnant?

Often, yes, but please tell me if you're pregnant or might be, as some points and techniques are avoided in pregnancy.

What if I'm on medication or seeing my GP?

Keep taking any prescribed medication and keep your GP involved. Acupuncture can sit alongside conventional care, and I'll ask about your medical history at your first visit.

Can I just drop in?

The clinic is a private treatment room attached to my home, so it's strictly by appointment. Please call, WhatsApp or email to book, and you'll be given directions and parking details. Please arrive at your booked time rather than early.

How do I book or cancel?

Call or WhatsApp 07799 904918, or request a time online. Please give at least 24 hours' notice if you need to cancel or rearrange, so the time can be offered to someone else. Appointments cancelled with less than 24 hours' notice may be charged at 50% of the fee, and missed appointments at the full fee. I understand that emergencies happen, so please just let me know.

What you'll take away

After every visit I write you a short summary: what we talked about, what I noticed, and anything to try at home before we meet again. Here's a made-up example, just so you can see the kind of thing you'll get.

Your treatment summary

Alex · example patient · Visit 1

What we're working on

Tight shoulders and a stiff neck, with tension headaches most weeks.

What I noticed

Your pulses felt tight and a little quick, with some tenderness across your shoulders and upper back.

Today's treatment

Points across the shoulders, neck and hands, to ease the tension and help you relax.

Your plan

Weekly for the next three visits, then we'll review together how you're getting on.

Looking after yourself

An earlier night this week if you can manage it, water through the day, and a short walk. Gentle neck and shoulder stretches, little and often, help too.

When to get in touch

If anything feels wrong, or you're worried about anything at all, call or message me directly — don't wait for your next visit.

Nathan

This is a made-up example so you can see the kind of thing you'll receive — every real summary is written personally, after your own visit. It isn't a medical diagnosis and doesn't replace advice from your GP.

Ready to book, or just have a question?
