Acupuncture for headaches
NICE says acupuncture can be considered to help prevent chronic tension-type headaches.
What the evidence says
NICE's headache guideline (CG150) says a course of up to 10 sessions over 5 to 8 weeks can be considered to help prevent chronic tension-type headaches. The ASA separately accepts evidence for the short-term relief of tension-type headache.

What a session involves
We'll talk about how often headaches come, what tends to bring them on, and your sleep, stress and posture. Treatment is adjusted to you, and we'll review how you're getting on as we go.
Acupuncture needles are solid and hair-fine, far thinner than a needle used for injections. Most people feel a light prick or nothing at all.

What I can't promise
Everyone is different, and acupuncture isn't a substitute for medical care. If you have a diagnosed condition or you're taking medication, keep your GP involved. I'll always tell you honestly whether I think acupuncture is right for you.
