Acupuncture for back pain

The ASA accepts evidence for short-term relief of chronic low back pain, alongside other treatment.

What the evidence says

The Advertising Standards Authority, which regulates what UK clinics can claim, accepts evidence that acupuncture can offer short-term relief of chronic low back pain, alongside other treatment. To be completely open: NICE's separate guideline on low back pain and sciatica (NG59) does not recommend acupuncture for that condition.

What a session involves

We'll talk through how long you've had the pain, what makes it better or worse, and your general health. I may check your pulses and tongue, as Chinese medicine practitioners traditionally do, alongside a conversation about your back.

Acupuncture needles are solid and hair-fine, far thinner than a needle used for injections. Most people feel a light prick or nothing at all.

What I can't promise

Everyone is different, and acupuncture isn't a substitute for medical care. If you have a diagnosed condition or you're taking medication, keep your GP involved. I'll always tell you honestly whether I think acupuncture is right for you.
