Getting to the root of your symptoms through acupuncture

Acupuncture utilizes incredibly fine needles, thinner than a strand of hair, delicately inserted into precise points on the body to initiate healing and restore equilibrium. Each acupuncture point functions as a conduit, transmitting energetic information electromagnetically through the fascia deep into the body's systems. Here's an in-depth look at how acupuncture achieves its therapeutic effects:

  1. Promotes Healing: Acupuncture gently stimulates the body with a subtle electrical impulse, prompting it to initiate its innate healing responses and restore homeostasis.
  2. Clears Blockages: By targeting areas of blocked qi (energy flow), acupuncture helps to alleviate stagnation, enhance organ function, and support overall health.
  3. Improves Circulation: Enhanced circulation induced by acupuncture optimizes the delivery of nutrients and oxygen throughout the body, fostering improved cellular function and vitality.
  4. Alleviates Pain: Acting as a natural analgesic, acupuncture interrupts pain signals within the nervous system, providing relief from chronic pain conditions and acute injuries.
  5. Balances Body Chemistry: Through its interaction with the nervous and endocrine systems, acupuncture influences biochemical responses, promoting hormonal balance and regulatory mechanisms.
  6. Reduces Inflammation: Acupuncture is effective in reducing inflammation by modulating immune responses and decreasing the production of pro-inflammatory markers, contributing to overall wellness and disease prevention.

Acupuncture's holistic approach considers each individual's unique constitution and health needs, ensuring personalized care and effective treatment outcomes. By harnessing the body's natural healing abilities, acupuncture offers a comprehensive therapeutic option for enhancing physical, emotional, and mental well-being.

Cupping Therapy

Cupping Therapy

Cupping therapy

If you experience frequent headaches or chronic musculoskeletal pain

Consider cupping therapy for relief. Cupping therapy is an ancient practice that uses suction to increase circulation to specific areas.   we, use cupping therapy to treat a wide range of health problems.

What is cupping therapy?

Cupping therapy is an ancient Chinese practice that eases acute and chronic pain. During treatment,  cups are placed on different parts of the body,  like your back, legs, arms, or chest.  The cups create a vacuum, pulling your skin upward and increasing blood flow to the area. That stimulates your body’s natural healing process,  relieving inflammation and tension.

Additionally, it’s thought that cupping unclogs the pores, helping your body release toxins.

What types of health problems can benefit from cupping therapy?

We use cupping therapy to treat a variety of health problems, including:

  • Arthritis
  • Respiratory issues, like asthma
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Gastrointestinal issues, like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Headaches and migraines
  • High blood pressure
  • Sports injuries

You might also benefit from cupping therapy if you work a physically demanding job.  If you regularly experience neck, back, leg, or shoulder pain.

What is recovery like after cupping therapy?

After cupping therapy, you can return to work and other activities right away. In the days following treatment, it’s normal to experience bruises and/or red marks on your skin where the cups have been placed. These shouldn’t cause any discomfort and typically heal within a few days.

Is cupping therapy safe?

Cupping therapy is safe and typically well-tolerated, but it isn’t for everyone. That’s especially true if you have an underlying medical condition that increases your risk of blood clots or bleeding, such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) or hemophilia.

Moxabustion

Moxibustion: Warming Therapy for Circulation and Pain Relief

Moxibustion is a therapeutic technique that involves burning dried mugwort (moxa) near acupuncture points to promote circulation and stimulate healing. This traditional Chinese medicine practice has been shown to effectively relieve pain, enhance energy levels, and support overall well-being.

What is Moxibustion?

Mugwort,  or artemisia, is a flowering plant in the daisy family. It’s used in  foods eaten around the world, including German Christmas goose, Korean  clam soup, and a green Japanese dessert known as kusa mochi

It’s also used in moxibustion. Mugwort leaves are dried and ground into small sticks or cones called moxa (similar to incense), which are then lite and used to warm points on your body and relieve a variety of conditions.

How is moxibustion done?

Direct moxibustion is when your practitioner places moxa cones directly onto your skin.

Indirect moxibustion is when the burning moxa doesn’t directly touch your body.

The practitioner may:

  • Hold the moxa about an inch away from your skin.
  • Place the moxa onto acupuncture needles, allowing the heat to travel to your body through the needles.
  • Put the moxa directly on the skin   or in a  “moxa box” before placing it onto your skin

Does moxibustion hurt?

With indirect moxibustion, the moxa never touches your skin. And even with  direct moxa, you should only feel heat and warmth, but not pain; your  practitioner will the moxa before it becomes too warm

What is moxibustion used for?

Moxibustion is usually good for cases where the disease is brought on by cold pathogens  This includes:

  • Joint pain.
  • Indigestion.
  • Organ prolapse.
  • Gastrointestinal issues.
  • Menstrual cramps.
  • Infertility.
  • Increase immunity.
  • and more

Discover Auricular Therapy: Harnessing the Power of Ear Acupuncture

Auricular therapy, also known as ear acupuncture or auriculotherapy, represents a sophisticated healing modality deeply rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It views the external ear as a microsystem intricately connected to the entire body, where specific points on the ear correspond to organs, tissues, and physiological functions. This holistic approach recognizes that by stimulating these points, practitioners can influence the corresponding areas of the body, promoting balance and supporting natural healing processes.

Auricular treatment involves the stimulation of these specific points on the ear using various techniques:

  • Auricular Acupuncture: Fine, sterile needles are inserted into precise points on the ear to influence the corresponding areas of the body. This method is used to address a wide range of health conditions, including pain management, stress relief, digestive disorders, emotional imbalances, insomnia, and menstrual irregularities.
  • Auricular Seeds or Magnets: Small seeds or magnets are applied to specific ear points and secured with adhesive tape. These provide continuous stimulation between acupuncture sessions and are commonly used for anxiety, smoking cessation, weight loss, addiction management, and enhancing mental clarity.
  • Auricular Massage: Gentle massage techniques are applied to stimulate ear points, promoting relaxation, improving circulation, and enhancing overall well-being. It is particularly effective for relieving tension headaches, TMJ disorders, and promoting lymphatic drainage.
  • Auricular Herbal Therapy: Herbal preparations or essential oils may be applied to ear points to complement treatment and enhance therapeutic effects. This approach is beneficial for supporting immune function, reducing inflammation, and improving skin conditions.

Auricular therapy is highly regarded for its effectiveness, minimal invasiveness, and ability to provide targeted support for various health issues. Whether used independently or in conjunction with traditional acupuncture and herbal medicine, auricular therapy offers a personalized approach to wellness, addressing both the symptoms and underlying causes of health imbalances.

Korean Hand Therapy

Korean Hand Therapy: Enhancing Health Through Hand Acupuncture

Korean Hand Therapy (KHT) is a specialized form of acupuncture that focuses on stimulating points on the hands to promote healing and restore balance in the body. Originating from Korean traditional medicine, KHT views the hands as a microsystem reflecting the entire body, where specific points correspond to organs, tissues, and systems. This approach allows practitioners to diagnose and treat health conditions through precise hand stimulation.

What Does Korean Hand Therapy Involve?

Korean Hand Therapy involves:

  • Hand Acupuncture: Fine needles are gently inserted into specific points on the hands corresponding to areas of concern or imbalance in the body. This method helps alleviate pain, improve circulation, and enhance overall well-being.
  • Hand Seeds or Magnets: Small seeds or magnets may be applied to hand points and secured with adhesive tape. These provide continuous stimulation between acupuncture sessions and are beneficial for managing chronic pain, and stress, and promoting relaxation.
  • Hand Massage: Gentle massage techniques applied to hand points stimulate circulation, reduce tension, and support musculoskeletal health.
  • Hand Herbal Therapy: Herbal preparations or essential oils may be used topically on hand points to enhance treatment effects, promoting healing and reducing inflammation.

How Does Korean Hand Therapy Work?

KHT works by stimulating hand points that correspond to specific organs or areas of the body, influencing the flow of qi (vital energy) and blood. This stimulation helps restore balance and harmony within the body's systems, addressing both symptoms and underlying causes of health issues.

What Can Korean Hand Therapy Treat?

Korean Hand Therapy is effective for treating a wide range of conditions, including:

  • Pain management (e.g., back pain, joint pain)
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Digestive disorders (e.g., indigestion, constipation)
  • Respiratory conditions (e.g., asthma, allergies)
  • Neurological disorders (e.g., headaches, neuropathy)
  • Women's health issues (e.g., menstrual irregularities, menopausal symptoms)
  • Emotional imbalances (e.g., depression, insomnia)

What to Expect During Treatment

During a KHT session, practitioners will conduct a thorough assessment of your health concerns and create a personalized treatment plan. Treatment involves the gentle insertion of needles or application of seeds/magnets on hand points, followed by a period of relaxation. Sessions are typically comfortable and soothing, with many clients experiencing immediate relief and improved well-being

  Turn Back Time with Micro-needling

Have you ever wished you could reverse the clock? Now you can with micro-needling, the latest A-list adored treatment that rejuvenates your skin for a fresher, younger look. Rest assured, it's not as painful as it sounds, and the benefits are abundant! Say goodbye to wrinkles and  scarring and embrace a smoother, more youthful complexion

How Microneedling works

Microneedling is a minimally invasive procedure that utilizes fine needles to create tiny, evenly-spaced micro-injuries in the skin. This initiates the body’s natural wound-healing process, prompting the healthy surrounding tissue to repair the damage and restore the skin to its optimal condition.

This reparative process helps diminish the appearance of dark spots,  wrinkles, sagging, and texture irregularities such as acne scars or stretch marks.

Recent studies have demonstrated that microneedling effectively targets melanocytes responsible for melanin overproduction, resulting in brighter, more even-toned skin.

Common questions about Microneedling

Who is not a suitable candidate for Microneedling?

Microneedling is generally safe for all skin types, but individuals who are pregnant, or have a history of eczema, psoriasis, herpes, diabetes, or other chronic conditions should consult with their physician for approval.

Does it cause discomfort?

Some discomfort may occur in certain areas of the face during the procedure.  However, the treatment is relatively quick, and your professional skin therapist will adjust the treatment according to your skin's tolerance over time.

How many treatments are needed?

For long-lasting, visible results, a series of treatments is recommended with any advanced skin treatment. The number of sessions required varies depending on your unique skin and goals, but typically, a series of 3 –  6 Microneedling treatments, spaced 4 – 6 weeks apart, is advised.

What is the downtime?

There is minimal downtime with this minimally invasive procedure. You may experience mild redness and irritation for 2 – 3 days after microneedling, but this will quickly subside. As part of your aftercare  program,  It's essential to follow the post-treatment home care routine  provided, as it is crucial for maintaining and enhancing your results

Here’s what to expect during a microneedling treatment:

Pre-Consultation:

We will assess your skin and determine suitability. A patch test for advanced resurfacing may be conducted, and you'll receive guidance on preparing your skin for optimal results.

Procedure:

  • Consultation:  Safety and suitability of treatment are reassessed, and photos of your skin may be taken.
  • Preparation: Your skin is cleansed, analyzed, degreased, and resurfaced ready for the treatment.
  • Treatment:   We will use an appropriate needle size and depth to target your skin health goals. The microneedling tool is administered evenly across your skin using the exclusive Dermalogica technique for best results. Skin is then wiped with sterile saline solution on gauze, followed by a final application of aftercare products.

Aftercare:

Most people require minimal downtime, if any.

You may experience redness for a few days after the procedure, which is a natural response. You will  be provide with post-procedure instructions, including how to apply aftercare products and what to avoid for the next 24-72 hours. Results will be visible within two weeks. It’s recommended to schedule a series of microneedling treatments  4-6 weeks apart for optimal improvements and skin maintenance.

Pain Management

Pain Management

We strive to help you get free from pain so that you can focus on the important things in life. We do not use a “one-size-fits-all” approach.  We achieve great results by customizing treatment to every patient.

Pain can be acute or chronic. Acute pain, usually resulting from injury,  requires treatments to move and release the discomfort. Chronic pain involves a focus on nourishing and supporting the body to relieve the distress.

Acupuncture alone or combined with other treatments is uniquely helpful with pain because it increases circulation and releases endorphins.

How does it work?

For pain management, acupuncture  working alone or in unison with other treatments works by:

  • Relieving pain and alleviating discomfort by relaxing muscles and stimulating the release of endorphins (natural pain-relieving chemicals) and serotonin (the happy hormone) to promote feelings of well-being.  Learn more about acupuncture for pain.
  • Decreasing inflammation by increasing the production of cortisol, the hormone that helps control inflammation in the body. Learn more about acupuncture for inflammation.
  • Reducing muscle tightness and spasms. Overactive muscles and involuntary muscle contractions can cause pain; placing acupuncture points along trigger points helps release constricted muscles. Learn more about acupuncture for trigger points.
  • Promoting healthy blood circulation by modulating certain brain chemicals that constrict and dilate blood vessels. This is helpful for alleviating pain associated with migraines and headaches where vessel constriction  (narrowing) and reduced blood flow is an issue.
  • Reducing stress and anxiety                 By regulating the hormones involved in the stress response (cortisol,  serotonin, noradrenaline, dopamine). Acupuncture can help the body adapt to stress and initiate the relaxation response. Learn more about acupuncture for anxiety and acupuncture for stress.
  • Relaxing the nervous system by activating the rest and digest response (the opposite of the fight or flight response) which affects how the brain sends pain signals to the body. An overwhelmed or stressed nervous system will respond to pain more intensely and lower your threshold for pain. Learn more about acupuncture and the nervous system.
  • Aids tissue healing and repair by stimulating the release of fibroblasts; these are the cells found in connective tissue that secrete collagen proteins to maintain tissue health.

We explore not only injuries and onset of pain, but any underlying  conditions that may be contributing or causing the issue. Treatment may include acupuncture, cupping and other therapies such as tui na  (massage) and heat therapy.

It’s important to treat pain as early as possible. Left untreated, minor discomfort such as neck pain can lead to postural or gait changes that  create lasting harm. Pain is our body’s clearest warning sign that something needs to be addressed to prevent future issues.

What type of things can be treated?

Some of the problematic conditions we see and treat  include:

  • Acute and chronic pain from injury
  • Chronic sciatica
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Endometriosis
  • Pelvic pain
