The I Ching

How to Do an I Ching Reading with Coins 🧧✨

The I Ching (Book of Changes) is an ancient Chinese divination tool used to gain insight into life's challenges, decisions, or spiritual guidance. Here’s a simple step-by-step guide on how to perform an I Ching reading using coins:

1. Set Your Intention

  • Before you begin, take a quiet moment to clear your mind.
  • Think about a specific question or situation where you seek guidance. Focus on this as you proceed.

2. Gather Materials

  • You’ll need three coins (any kind will do).
  • A notebook or paper to record your results.
  • A copy of the I Ching text for interpretation.

3. Understand the Basics

Each toss of the three coins creates one of the six lines in a hexagram. There are two types of lines:

  • Solid Line (Yang): Represents action, movement, and strength.
  • Broken Line (Yin): Represents receptivity, stillness, and flexibility.

4. Assign Values to the Coins

For each coin toss, you’ll assign values:

  • Heads = 3
  • Tails = 2

5. Toss the Coins

  • Toss the three coins together six times.
  • Add the values of the coins for each toss to determine if the line is Yin or Yang.

6. Create Each Line

  • If the total is 6: This is a changing Yin line (broken line that may change).
  • If the total is 7: This is a Yang line (solid line).
  • If the total is 8: This is a Yin line (broken line).
  • If the total is 9: This is a changing Yang line (solid line that may change).

7. Record the Lines

  • Start building your hexagram from bottom to top by drawing each line you get from the coin tosses how to draw the lines is shown below.

8. Interpret the Hexagram

  •  After tossing the coins six times and constructing your hexagram, use the hexagram chart below. Match the top three lines of your hexagram with the columns and the bottom three lines with the rows. Follow them across until they intersect at a number. Enter this number in the I Ching reading section below the chart to see your result.
  • The changing lines (6s or 9s) indicate that the situation may shift. You may need to read a second, "transformed" hexagram to reflect the change.

9. Reflect on the Reading

  • Read the interpretation of your hexagram and changing lines, then reflect on how the message applies to your question or situation.
  • Take time to meditate on the guidance given and how it resonates with your life.
